Coven Academy, the supernatural teen drama from High School Musical: The Musical: The Series creator Tim Federle, premieres Thursday, October 1, at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on Freeform, and its full trailer puts a love triangle at the center of the story.
Freeform airs the first four episodes back to back on premiere night. All 10 episodes stream the next day, Friday, October 2, on Disney+, Hulu and Freeform On Demand.
What The Trailer Shows
Disney released the trailer on September 18, set to Olivia Rodrigo’s “Brutal.” It follows Briar, played by Malina Pauli Weissman, as she struggles to control her new powers as a witch. It also lays out a turbulent love triangle between Briar, Jake (Malachi Barton) and Ollie (Louis Thresher).
The first teaser, released August 13 to the same song, focused on tension inside the young coven, driven by mysteries about Briar’s past and Jake’s dangerous desires.
The Story And Cast
The series is set in New Orleans at Crescent Veil, an elite boarding school for magic, where power is currency, secrets are lethal and attraction is a liability. Three teenage witches and their warlock classmates get caught between ancient supernatural wars and forbidden romances, and have to decide how far they will go to protect their city and themselves.
Weissman, of A Series of Unfortunate Events, plays Briar, a fiercely independent New Yorker who discovers she is a witch. Barton, of Camp Rock 3 and Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires, plays Jake, a magnetic warlock with a dangerous edge, and Thresher plays Ollie, a newly turned vampire. Jordan Leftwich plays Sasha, a student who can read minds, and Ora Duplass plays Tegan, a witch who can bend time. White Collar star Tiffani Thiessen plays Miss Graves, the formidable and glamorous head of the school, and Hacks actor Devon Sawa guest stars as Mr. Cole, a charismatic warlock professor.
Federle executive produces the series through his Chorus Boy Productions, in association with Disney Kids and Family.
Three Thursdays On Freeform
The premiere opens Freeform’s 31 Nights of Halloween. On Freeform’s 31 Nights schedule, episodes five through seven air Thursday, October 8, at 9 p.m., and the season finale, episodes eight through ten, airs Thursday, October 15, at 9 p.m.
Freeform repeats each new block in encore slots, starting Saturday, October 3, at 9:35 a.m., so cable viewers who miss premiere night can catch up before episode five.
