Astro Orbiter is on Walt Disney World’s refurbishment calendar for a short closure in early 2027. The Tomorrowland ride at Magic Kingdom is listed as closed January 5 through 7, a Tuesday through Thursday, which points to a January 8 return if the dates hold.
Disney has not said what the work involves. The closure appears on Disney’s calendar, but the Astro Orbiter attraction page did not show a closure notice when Blog Mickey checked, and there is no description of the project. Three days is also a far smaller window than the last time the rockets came down.

A Much Shorter Stop Than The 2025 Rebuild
Astro Orbiter spent more than five months out of service in 2025. Crews began taking the ride apart on January 20 of that year, removing every planet from the spinning tower, and the attraction reopened on June 27. Nothing that large fits between a Tuesday and a Thursday, so January’s work is most likely maintenance or a targeted repair rather than another teardown.
That is what makes the new listing interesting. Blog Mickey, which spotted the closure on the calendar, reported in October 2025 that the ride’s central lift had stopped working after the rebuild. The lift is meant to raise and lower the whole ride, separate from the joystick riders use to steer their own rockets, and Cast Members said at the time that the ride was running at about half its usual height. On Blog Mickey’s most recent check, the lift still appeared to be out of order.
Whether this closure is meant to fix it is still an open question. Disney has said nothing about the lift, and it was never clear whether a repair could happen without another full teardown. If the lift does come back, the first sign should be testing in the days before the ride reopens.
What It Means For Early January Trips
For guests heading to Magic Kingdom in the first week of January, the impact is small. Astro Orbiter is down for three weekdays, and the closure ends before the following weekend. Refurbishment dates do shift, so it is worth checking the My Disney Experience app closer to your visit in case the work starts later or runs long.
If the ride does come back on January 8 with its lift working, riders would get the full climb above Tomorrowland again for the first time since the lift was reported broken in October 2025. If not, the rockets will keep flying at the lower height guests have seen since then.
Magic Kingdom has a busy start to the year on other fronts too. Extended evening hours are also set to return to the park in early January, which we covered when Magic Kingdom’s extended evening hours were announced for January 6.
