Marvel Studios turned Hall H into Latveria on Saturday night. Doctor Doom masks and capes were handed out to the crowd before the panel began, the room went green, and the studio spent the next hour rolling out the biggest push yet for Avengers: Doomsday ahead of its December 18 release.
Robert Downey Jr. took the stage with Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell, then two additional stages were revealed at the back of the hall, one holding the X-Men contingent and the other the Avengers. Nearly two dozen cast members turned up in all. Joe and Anthony Russo joined them to talk through the film, and Marvel unveiled a new poster during the presentation.
What The Exclusive Footage Showed
The sizzle reel was screened for the room only and has not been released publicly, but reporters in attendance have described it in detail. It opens on Doom seated on his throne while Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm delivers a voiceover about Victor, describing a man who was once the smartest person in any room and who used to be kind and caring before everything he loved was taken from him.
From there the reel cuts through the ensemble: Johnny Storm holding Franklin, Steve Rogers cradling a baby, Shuri in Wakanda, Thor looking at his daughter Love, a battle-worn Cyclops, plus glimpses of Loki, Gambit, Magneto and Shang-Chi. Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards then appears amid a ruined landscape and demands to know whether Doom is responsible, escalating to shouting at him by name. Doom’s answer is that all of them have lived stolen lives, and now they must give them back.
The confrontation with Thor follows. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor swears Doom will beg for hell long before he grants it, then swings, only for Doom to catch Stormbreaker between two fingers and bat it away with magic. His reply is the line that reportedly brought the house down: hell answers to him. The footage closes with Doom placing a hand on the ground and resurrecting a field of broken Sentinels, the mutant-hunting machines last seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past, as his army.
Deadpool Crashed The Party
Ryan Reynolds interrupted the panel in costume to lob questions at the assembled cast, at one point asking whether there was really no additional photography left on the film. The bit doubled as confirmation that Deadpool is apparently not making his Avengers debut in Doomsday, though Reynolds hinted news on that front could arrive before long.
Anthony Mackie turned up in Doom green and defended the choice, reasoning that you eat tacos on Taco Tuesday and you wear Doom green on Doomsday. Downey teased that some of the assembled heroes may end up on Doom’s side of the conflict, which lines up with a film that has spent its entire marketing campaign selling its villain rather than its team. The emphasis on the children of Marvel’s heroes throughout the reel also suggests where the threat is pointed.
