Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed $900 million at the domestic box office on Friday, September 4, becoming only the second film in history to reach that mark and the fastest ever to get there. The Sony and Marvel Studios release added $3.9 million on Friday to push past the milestone on its 36th day in release.
The only other film to reach $900 million in North America is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which needed 50 days to do it in early 2016. Brand New Day beat that pace by two weeks. Avengers: Endgame, the third biggest domestic release of all time, never got there, finishing its run at $858.3 million.
The Force Awakens Record Is Weeks Away
The next target is the all-time domestic record. The Force Awakens finished its North American run at $936.6 million, a figure no film has seriously threatened in the eleven years since. Brand New Day entered the Labor Day weekend at $899.7 million after a fifth week of $30.4 million, then took about $18 million over the three-day weekend and roughly $23.5 million across the four-day holiday, which leaves it at about $923 million through Labor Day and roughly $14 million short of the record.
At the film’s current pace, that gap closes in a matter of weeks, and possibly days, which would make Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing the highest-grossing film ever released in North America. It remained the number one film in the country in its sixth weekend, the longest run at number one since Avatar: The Way of Water held for seven in 2022, holding off two new wide releases, Paramount’s By Any Means and A24’s Onslaught.
Legs Nobody Projected
What makes the run remarkable is not the opening, which set its own record at $360.1 million, but everything after it. Brand New Day opened only about $3 million ahead of Endgame’s $357.1 million debut, yet it already sits more than $60 million past where Endgame’s entire run ended, a margin built on holds rather than a bigger launch. The Destin Daniel Cretton film has held the number one spot on all but a handful of days since it opened on July 31.
Worldwide the picture is just as strong. Brand New Day passed $2.3 billion globally at the end of August, and is fighting Avatar: The Way of Water for third on the all-time list behind Avatar and Endgame.
Update, September 7: that fight is settled. Sunday’s global figures put Brand New Day at $2.4 billion worldwide, with $1.485 billion from international markets and $917.8 million domestic through Sunday, which makes it the third highest grossing film of all time behind Avatar at $2.9 billion and Endgame at $2.799 billion. The domestic total reached about $923 million by the end of Labor Day. For the first time since the film opened, it did not win the global weekend: The Odyssey took that with about $46 million to Brand New Day’s $44.1 million, though Spider-Man stayed number one domestically.
A Summer Record Comes With It
The Labor Day frame also pushed the 2026 summer box office to an all-time record. Domestic ticket sales from May 1 through September 7 stand at $4.76 billion, according to Rentrak, past the $4.756 billion set in 2013, with Brand New Day supplying the largest share of it. Last week we reported that the film was closing in on the $900 million club; it took a few more days to get there. The record it is chasing now is the last one left.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day stars Tom Holland, Zendaya and Sadie Sink, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, and is distributed by Sony Pictures in association with Marvel Studios.
