Brand New Day Closes In On The 900 Million Club That Only The Force Awakens Has Ever Entered

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a few days of ticket sales away from a number only one film in history has ever reached. The Sony and Marvel Studios release stood at $891.5 million domestic after 31 days, and it is expected to cross $900 million no later than Friday, with Labor Day weekend traffic waiting behind it if weekday sales slow.

A Club Of One

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the only movie ever to clear $900 million at the North American box office, finishing at $936.7 million after its 2015 release. It needed 50 days to reach the $900 million line. Brand New Day is on pace to get there in roughly 36, and its fifth weekend showed why. The film took in $22.2 million over August 28 to 30, one of the ten best fifth weekends ever recorded, and held the No. 1 spot domestically for a fifth straight frame. The Force Awakens record itself now sits about $45 million away, a margin that would have sounded absurd for any film a month into release before this one rewrote the reference points.

Third Place Worldwide

The global picture moved on Monday as well. When final overseas actuals landed, trackers put the film’s worldwide total at $2.33 billion, nudging it past the lifetime gross of Avatar: The Way of Water and into third place on the all-time worldwide chart. The trades had not yet published a formal writethru on the ranking as of Tuesday, and the reported gap over the Avatar sequel is slim enough that the two films sit within a rounding error of each other, but the direction of travel is not in question. Only Avatar at $2.92 billion and Avengers: Endgame at $2.79 billion remain ahead, and no projection has Brand New Day reaching either.

The international side is doing its share of the work. The film added $44.5 million overseas in its fifth weekend, a drop of just 36.4 percent, and its international total now stands at $1.44 billion across 66 markets. That hold is far gentler than the comparable frames for Spider-Man: No Way Home or Endgame, which is a large part of why the global total kept climbing long after the record opening.

The Records Keep Stacking

The run started with the biggest opening weekend in domestic history at $360.1 million, and the milestones have not stopped since. The film already passed Avengers: Endgame for second place on the all-time domestic list in late August, making it the biggest MCU release ever in the United States. Passing The Way of Water worldwide means it has now cleared every superhero film other than Endgame globally, along with Titanic and Ne Zha 2. The remaining questions are simple ones. The $900 million domestic line looks like a matter of days, and the all-time domestic crown held by The Force Awakens will come down to how much gas is left after Labor Day.
