Live-Action Moana Hits Digital September 8 And Blu-Ray October 6 After A Bruising Summer In Theaters

Disney’s live-action Moana arrives on premium digital platforms on September 8, less than two months after its July 10 theatrical debut. The release covers Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home, with 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD editions following on October 6 alongside a limited-edition 4K UHD SteelBook.

What Comes With The Home Release

Directed by Hamilton filmmaker Thomas Kail, the remake stars newcomer Catherine Lagaʻaia as Moana with Dwayne Johnson stepping into live action as Maui, alongside Rena Owen as Gramma Tala, John Tui as Chief Tui and Frankie Adams as Sina. The digital and physical editions carry a slate of bonus features, including a sing-along version of the film, a look at costume designer Liz McGregor’s work, a feature on the construction of the village of Motunui, and a piece on choreographer Tiana Nonosina Liufau, who returns to the world of Moana after contributing choreography to the original animated film. Exclusive cast and filmmaker interviews round out the package.

The October 6 SteelBook features Johnson and Lagaʻaia on the packaging with Pua and Heihei, and completists can pick up a three-film collection that bundles the live-action movie with the animated Moana and Moana 2, available digitally on September 8 and on DVD October 6. A Disney+ streaming date has not been announced.

A Fast Turnaround After A Rough Summer

The quick move to home platforms follows one of the more difficult theatrical runs Disney has had with a marquee release. The remake opened to $43.1 million domestically in one of the weakest debuts ever for a Disney live-action adaptation, a striking result for a franchise whose animated entries have been juggernauts. The original 2016 film grossed roughly $684 million worldwide, and 2024’s Moana 2 crossed a billion dollars. The live-action version instead spent its summer shedding screens, and the projections that it could lose Disney as much as $125 million made it one of the season’s cautionary tales.

There is an audience wrinkle in the story, though. While critics were unkind, the film earned an A- CinemaScore from opening night audiences and carries a Verified Hot audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the kind of split that home video and streaming windows tend to reward. Disney is clearly counting on families who skipped the theatrical run to meet the film at home, where the price of admission looks very different.

The Dates To Know

Digital purchase opens September 8 on Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, standard Blu-ray, DVD and the SteelBook all land October 6, the same day the three-film DVD collection arrives. If the usual pattern holds, the Disney+ debut would come somewhere near the physical release, but Disney has not put a date on it, and this film’s unusual box office trajectory makes the streaming timing harder to predict than most.
