Spider-Man: Brand New Day added $3.4 million on its fourth Monday, August 24, and that was all it needed. The film has reached $858.4 million in North America, edging past the $858.3 million lifetime total of Avengers: Endgame. Brand New Day passes Endgame to become the second highest grossing movie in domestic box office history and the biggest Marvel film ever in the United States, and it did it in 25 days.
How The Final Gap Closed
The verified domestic figure over the weekend was $854.9 million, still $3.4 million short of the record, as we noted in our earlier coverage. That Monday’s gross turned out to be exactly the amount needed, and the record fell on August 25.
The context makes the number more striking. Endgame needed its full 2019 run plus a re-release to post $858.3 million. Brand New Day is still in its fourth week, having won a fourth straight weekend with $39 million on a 45 percent drop, the best hold of its run.
Only The Force Awakens Is Left
The domestic ladder now reads Star Wars: The Force Awakens at $936.6 million, Brand New Day at $858.4 million, Endgame at $858.3 million, Spider-Man: No Way Home at $814.8 million and Avatar at $785.2 million. Holland is now in three of the four biggest domestic releases of all time, and two of the three biggest Marvel movies in the United States are Sony releases.
The film is projected to keep climbing toward $900 million, a mark only The Force Awakens has approached. It sat $41.6 million short of that milestone on August 25. Whether it can threaten the Star Wars record depends on how it holds through September, when Avengers: Endgame Encore arrives on September 25 and could add a few dollars to the film it just passed.
Domestic Is Not Global
This is a domestic record only. Worldwide, Brand New Day is at roughly $2.22 billion, which puts it sixth all time by most counts, while Endgame’s $2.799 billion global total remains well out of reach. Our coverage of the film crossing $2 billion has the international breakdown, and the record run started with a $360 million opening weekend that took the all-time opening record from Endgame, posted without a single IMAX screen.
Sony holds the Spider-Man distribution rights, so this is a Sony record as much as a Marvel Studios one. It was already the studio’s biggest domestic and global release before it caught Endgame.
