Spider-Man: Brand New Day is rewriting the record book faster than any film ever has. Sony and Marvel’s blockbuster became the fastest movie in history to cross $700 million at the domestic box office, hitting the mark in 13 days, and on Sunday it became just the eighth film ever to reach $2 billion worldwide. The run started with a $145 million second weekend and has not slowed since.

Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day collected $145 million in its second domestic weekend, the third biggest second weekend in box office history, according to actuals reported by Variety. The figure came in above the $143 million that studios had estimated on Saturday, a rare case of a Monday number moving up rather than down.

The bigger milestone landed overseas. Deadline reports the film is now the second fastest release ever to cross $1 billion at the international box office, pushing its global total to $1.67 billion through that weekend, ten days into its run. Along the way, Brand New Day became the highest grossing Hollywood film in India’s history, taking a crown previously held by Avatar: The Way of Water.

UPDATE: The Fastest To $700 Million, And $2 Billion Is Next

The film crossed $700 million domestically on Wednesday, August 12, reaching $704.5 million in 13 days. That is the fastest any release has ever gotten there, breaking a record Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Endgame had shared at 16 days, per Deadline. Only seven films have ever reached $700 million in North America at all.

Internationally, Brand New Day has taken $1.108 billion, edging past No Way Home’s $1.106 billion to become Sony’s biggest overseas release ever and the tenth highest foreign earner of any film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Variety notes the film is running 31 percent ahead of where No Way Home stood at the same point.

UPDATE: $2 Billion Crossed, And $800 Million Domestic In Record Time

The weekend actuals made the milestones official. Brand New Day’s third weekend came in at $71 million, above Sunday’s estimates, down just 51 percent, the second best third weekend in domestic history behind only The Force Awakens’ $90.2 million and a better hold than Avengers: Endgame managed at the same stage, per Deadline. That lifted the domestic total to $786.8 million through Sunday, and by Tuesday the film had pushed past $800 million, reaching the mark in 19 days. Only three other films have ever grossed $800 million in North America, The Force Awakens, Endgame and No Way Home, and none got there faster than 23 days.

Globally, Variety puts the worldwide total at $2.022 billion through the weekend, making Brand New Day the eighth film in history to join the $2 billion club and already the eighth biggest release of all time. The next rung is Avengers: Infinity War at $2.03 billion, a gap the film’s daily grosses should close within days, with The Force Awakens’ $2.07 billion just beyond it and Titanic and the Avatar films further up the chart. Crossing $2 billion also carried it past No Way Home’s $1.9 billion lifetime total, making it the highest grossing Spider-Man film ever released.

The Hold Nobody Saw Coming

A $145 million second weekend represents a drop of roughly 60 percent from the film’s record $360 million opening. That sounds steep until it is stacked against history. Only two films have ever posted a bigger second weekend, and Brand New Day managed its hold while playing without a single IMAX screen in North America, since The Odyssey still controls the large format under its exclusive window.

The film added IMAX engagements to its calendar as that exclusive winds down, which gives the third weekend a premium screen boost most blockbusters get in week one.

India Rewrites The Record Book

The India result is the number that will follow this movie around. Hollywood titles have historically fought an uphill battle in that market against homegrown blockbusters, and the benchmark Brand New Day just cleared belonged to a James Cameron film that played in Indian theaters for months. The new Spider-Man passed it in under two weeks.

Deadline’s international report notes the film’s pace past $1 billion overseas trails only one release, and Variety’s domestic actuals story frames the weekend as a near record on this side of the Pacific as well.

What Comes Next

With $2 billion behind it, the conversation shifts to where the run actually ends. Box office watchers have floated the possibility of the first $1 billion domestic gross in history, a threshold no film has ever touched, and The Force Awakens’ $936.6 million domestic record is the marker to watch. The film carries a $225 million production budget, so the profitability question was settled weeks ago. Marvel also just had its promotional runway at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, where the Disney Entertainment Showcase leaned heavily on the studio’s slate.
