“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office. It passed “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” on Tuesday night, ending a run at the top that had lasted more than a decade.
Variety reports the film at $936.773 million domestically after 47 days in theaters. The Force Awakens finished at $936.6 million, a total it had held since 2015.
Sony Made It Official Wednesday
The studio confirmed the record the following day, and the film’s account marked it with a video. “Doesn’t get bigger than this,” the post read. “Thank you to the fans for helping Spider-Man: Brand New Day make cinematic history. It’s now the highest-grossing domestic release of ALL TIME at the North American box office.”
Lucasfilm answered with a congratulations card of its own.

Brand New Day is a Sony film rather than a Disney one. Columbia Pictures produced it and Sony Pictures Releasing distributed it worldwide, with Marvel Studios co-producing and Disney taking a share of the profits.
How It Got Here
The film broke the all-time preview record with $72 million before it had a single IMAX screen, then opened to $360 million domestically, the biggest opening weekend ever. It passed No Way Home and then Avengers: Endgame to reach second place by the end of August.
It crossed $900 million in 36 days, against the 50 days The Force Awakens took, and is only the second film ever to pass that mark. The last $36 million took another eleven days as the run slowed.
The Worldwide Picture
Globally the film sits third all time, behind “Avatar” at $2.92 billion and “Avengers: Endgame” at $2.79 billion.
It is now about $63 million from becoming the first film to reach $1 billion domestically. Variety’s read is that it probably cannot get there without a re-release.
