What better way to celebrate a movie premiere than a trip to Walt Disney World? As Disney’s live-action Moana set sail in theaters, the film’s star, Catherine Laga’aia, paid a visit to EPCOT to experience the attraction inspired by the character she now brings to life.
Moana Meets Journey Of Water
According to the Disney Parks Blog, Laga’aia explored Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana, the self-guided outdoor trail in EPCOT’s World Nature neighborhood. As she made her way through the interactive experience, the actress answered fun questions about stepping into the iconic role, shared favorite moments from filming, and teased what audiences can look forward to in the new movie. She tried out many of the attraction’s playful water elements and seemed especially charmed by the sculpture of Pua worked into the rockwork.
The visit carries a nice sense of tradition. When Journey of Water first opened two years ago, original Moana voice actress Auli’i Cravalho stopped by to experience it, and Cravalho now serves as an executive producer on the live-action film. Laga’aia even got the chance to meet the character Moana herself during her adventure through the trail.
Moana Sails Across The Parks
The EPCOT visit is part of a much larger Moana moment stretching across Disney’s parks and beyond. Guests can spot the character in nighttime spectaculars like Wondrous Journeys and World of Color at the Disneyland Resort, learn to draw Heihei and Pua at Animation Academy, and enjoy Moana-themed live entertainment across the Disney Cruise Line fleet. It all coincides with the theatrical debut of the film, which stars Laga’aia alongside Dwayne Johnson as Maui.
The 19-year-old Samoan-Australian actress makes her feature film debut in the title role, stepping into a legacy she has called an incredible honor. The remake has drawn a mixed critical response, having opened to the worst reviews in the franchise’s history, but Laga’aia’s genuine joy exploring the parks offers a heartwarming counterpoint. Journey of Water remains open daily at EPCOT for guests who want to follow in her footsteps.
