Disney+ and Hulu have given a Glee reboot a series order, bringing back Ryan Murphy’s musical comedy about a high school show choir in Lima, Ohio, more than a decade after the original wrapped on Fox.

20th Television, the studio that made the original, is producing the new series. Disney has not announced a cast, premiere date, episode count or story details. The announcement also did not name producers, and sources told The Hollywood Reporter that deals for the creative team are still being finalized.
How It Got Here
Murphy floated a return in July. While promoting his FX series The Shards, he said Glee had caught on with younger viewers. “That show is interesting because it’s come back around,” he said. “So many young people now watch it. And I’m like, ‘Maybe we should revisit that show.'”
By late September he had a script. Murphy wrote it with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, his Glee co-creators, and said he had been in touch with about 10 original cast members, who were enthusiastic about the idea.
Who Might Come Back
Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry, has said she is open to returning. “I love ‘Glee.’ I will always love ‘Glee.’ I love Ryan Murphy,” she told E! News. “…I will follow Ryan wherever he goes.”
Chris Colfer, who played Kurt Hummel, sounded more torn when he spoke to Bustle this month. “It was a really tough show to do, and it would be really hard to do it now that Naya [Rivera] is gone,” he said. “But I do know that Glee fans would probably come after me with pitchforks and jazz hands if I said no.”
Rivera, who played Santana Lopez, died in 2020. Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, died in 2013 while the show was still on the air.
Glee’s Track Record
Glee ran six seasons on Fox from 2009 to 2015 and won six Emmys, including Murphy’s directing award for the pilot and Jane Lynch’s award for playing Sue Sylvester. It followed the New Directions, the glee club at William McKinley High School, as they competed on the show choir circuit. Every episode featured musical numbers, mostly covers of pop and Broadway songs, and the music still draws about 4 million monthly Spotify listeners, according to Disney.
The original series streams on Hulu.
