The villain roster for Spider-Man: Brand New Day keeps expanding, and the latest addition is one comics fans will recognize immediately.
First Look at Ramrod
A new official TV spot for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has given Marvel fans the first look at Ramrod, a lesser-known but genuinely dangerous antagonist from the pages of Marvel Comics. The blink-and-you-miss-it shot shows the shirtless, metal-armed brute charging at Spider-Man, dodging at the last second and slamming headfirst into a brick wall, a moment that directly recreates the cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #221, “The Rage of Ramrod,” from 1981. Who Is Ramrod?
In the comics, Ramrod is an obscure cyborg villain who debuted in the pages of Daredevil in the early 1970s: a hard-driving construction foreman transformed after an accident into a cybernetic enforcer with steel-reinforced bones, superhuman strength, and brute durability. He was originally sent after Daredevil before crossing paths with Spider-Man, and he has remained a smash-first, hired-muscle heavy ever since. Online reports have suggested Billy Clements may be playing the character, though Marvel Studios has not confirmed the casting. His inclusion suggests the film is going wide on its threat landscape, with the prevailing expectation being that Ramrod appears in a fast-paced opening montage showing Peter’s four years of crime-fighting since No Way Home.
A Packed Villain Lineup
Ramrod joins a villain lineup that already includes the Savage Hulk confrontation, Michael Mando’s Scorpion, and Marvin Jones III’s Tombstone, based on previous trailers and promotional material, plus the ninja army of The Hand and the still-secret main antagonist. Spider-Man: Brand New Day appears to be positioning itself as one of the most action-dense entries in the MCU Spider-Man series, giving Peter Parker a very different kind of challenge than the more technologically sophisticated threats he has faced in prior films.
