Anna and Elsa have new clothes, and Kristoff is wearing a suit. Disney gave the first real look at Frozen 3 on Thursday inside the Walt Disney Animation Studios pavilion at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, more than a year before the film reaches theaters and two years after the project last surfaced at the same convention.
The display shows the main cast in character designs for the third film, which opens on Wednesday, November 24, 2027, the day before Thanksgiving.
What The Display Actually Shows
Anna appears in a light pink dress with a mini cape. Elsa keeps the blue and purple ombre that has defined her since 2013, but the dress is new and comes with a hood and a longer dark blue cape. Olaf, Kristoff and Sven are all dressed formally, which is the detail that set the show floor talking.
Frozen 2 closed with Kristoff finally proposing to Anna, and a wedding has been the obvious next beat ever since. The formal wear is not a confirmation of one, and Disney did not announce a plot point on Thursday, but it is the strongest visual signal the studio has given about where the story opens.
UPDATE: The Showcase Confirmed The Wedding
The formal wear meant exactly what it looked like. Frozen 3 closed out Friday night’s Disney Entertainment Showcase at the Honda Center, where Kristen Bell confirmed on stage that Anna and Kristoff are getting married in the film, with Elsa at her sister’s side. The footage shown in the room went further: a mysterious new female villain crashes the celebration, and on their wedding night Anna and Kristoff find Elsa on a dock studying a strange stone that opens a portal to a snowy dimension, one Idina Menzel described as “a frozen land more wild and dangerous than anything Elsa has ever created.” The villain’s face stayed hidden, with the footage showing only a woman with short black hair and a dramatic cape, and Disney has not announced who voices her.
The music came out too. Bell and Menzel performed a reworked version of “Frozen Heart” on stage, and Josh Gad debuted a new Olaf song called “Ooooh, Samantha,” tied to the snowman’s first crush, with both songs written by returning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Part of the story takes the characters far from Arendelle, and closing the biggest presentation of the weekend with Frozen 3 says plenty about where Disney thinks its next animated juggernaut lives.
The Release Date Has Already Moved Once
Frozen 3 was originally dated for November 25, 2026, which would have put it in theaters this year. Disney pushed it a full year at D23 in 2024 and it has held at November 24, 2027 since.
Jennifer Lee, who wrote and co-directed the first two films, is directing, and at that same 2024 event she framed the story as too large for one film, telling the audience the team came out of Frozen 2 with a lot of questions and needed two movies to answer them. That comment is the closest thing to a Frozen 4 announcement Disney has made. The core voice cast is returning, with Kristen Bell as Anna, Idina Menzel as Elsa, Jonathan Groff as Kristoff and Josh Gad as Olaf.
The Rest Of The Animation Pavilion
Frozen 3 shared the space with Hexed, Disney Animation’s next feature, which arrives this November. The pavilion named its leads as Billie Doe and Bucket and put its villains on display, and Lilo and Scratch, the animated short Disney announced earlier this year, will play alongside it. Jared Bush, who now leads the studio as chief creative officer, spoke about what is coming next and teased a Mickey 100 project in development.
