How to Activate Grogu Mode on Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (VIDEO)

Grogu mode on Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is a hidden Easter egg that replaces the ride’s standard in-flight audio with Grogu’s coos, chirps, and babbling reactions throughout the entire mission. Here’s exactly how to unlock it.

The updated Smugglers Run attraction debuted on May 22, 2026 at both Disneyland Resort and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, bringing Din Djarin and Grogu into the cockpit as part of a brand-new mission. Along with the story overhaul came a new secret mode, replacing the beloved Chewie mode that fans had been unlocking for years.

Before we get into the steps, check out this full ride-through of Grogu mode so you know what you’re working toward:

Note: The video above shows what Grogu mode looks and sounds like during the ride but does not show the activation process. Keep reading for the step-by-step instructions.

What Is Grogu Mode?

Grogu mode is a fun and silly way of experiencing the attraction where Grogu is basically in control and you will mostly only hear him throughout most of the ride. Instead of the standard narration, riders hear Grogu’s sounds, reactions, and coos during much of the experience. The Cantina song also plays during Grogu mode when the Coruscant planet is chosen.

Because the mode swaps out so much of the regular dialogue, it’s worth riding the updated mission at least once the normal way first. Without Mando’s usual narration explaining what’s happening, first-timers may find themselves a little lost.

Who Can Activate Grogu Mode?

This is the key thing most people miss: Grogu mode is entirely up to the gunners. The gunners sit in the two middle seats of the cockpit. If you want to guarantee you’re in a gunner seat, you can request it from the cast member handling seat assignments, though it’s at their discretion.

One major upgrade from the old Chewie mode: unlocking Grogu mode is much easier because only two people need to activate it instead of the entire cockpit.

Step-by-Step: How to Activate Grogu Mode

Follow these steps carefully and in order, because timing matters.

Step 1: Fasten Your Seatbelt First

Before anyone at any other station pushes any buttons, both gunners need to fasten their seatbelts. Don’t skip this. The sequence won’t work if you haven’t buckled up before starting.

Step 2: Hold the Back-Most White Square Button

Both gunners should hold down the back-most white square button in the row of four. This is the button closest to the back of the cockpit, not the one closest to you.

Step 3: Press Your Activation Button While Still Holding

While holding the white square button down, press the round glowing activation button to activate your station. Both gunners need to complete this simultaneously, before anyone else in the cockpit presses anything.

Step 4: Watch for the Green Light

If both riders complete the sequence correctly, Grogu appears on the Falcon’s communication screen and the cockpit lights all flash green. That’s your confirmation. The mission will then play out with Grogu’s audio taking over.

If you’re not sure what to do in the moment, you can ask the cast member on duty and they’ll help you activate Grogu mode. They’re in on it.

What Happens During Grogu Mode?

Once activated, the experience shifts noticeably. Grogu enters full gremlin mode, cooing, chirping, and reacting throughout the entire mission. The ride’s outcome doesn’t change, but the atmosphere is completely different. It’s a great reason to ride multiple times, especially if you’ve already done the standard mission.
