One of the most influential filmmakers in Disney animation history is finally ready to tell his story. Ron Clements, the director behind classics from The Little Mermaid to Moana, has a new release date for his long-awaited memoir, Making Disney Magic… from a Mermaid to Moana: Tales of a Disney Animation Director.
A Career Spanning 45 Years
Clements, who often collaborated with co-director John Musker, helped shape some of the most beloved animated films Disney ever produced, including The Great Mouse Detective, Aladdin, Hercules, Treasure Planet, and The Princess and the Frog. The book chronicles his more than four decades at Walt Disney Animation Studios, from his start in the studio’s Talent Development Program to his role as a pivotal storyteller and leader.
A Memoir Meets Art Book
Described as an armchair-worthy memoir that doubles as a coffee table art book, the release features nearly 500 pages and more than 1,000 pieces of archival artwork and photos. In a fun touch, the corners of the book serve as an animation flip-book celebrating Disney characters from the 1970s through the 2010s. The book includes a foreword from Clements’ longtime collaborator John Musker.
When To Expect It
First announced at D23 in 2024 and originally slated for 2025, the memoir has now been reported with a fall release, with LaughingPlace citing an October 13, 2026 date. Note that some retailer listings still show an August 18 date, so fans may want to confirm before pre-ordering. Clements recently returned to Disney Animation in a mentorship role, bringing his career full circle.
