Marvel Comics is marking Pixar’s 40th anniversary in a big way this summer, releasing a series of special homage variant covers that place beloved Pixar characters inside some of Marvel’s most iconic comic book imagery.
The Pixar 40th Anniversary Variant Covers begin rolling out in July across select Marvel titles and continue through September. As CBR reported, eight covers have been revealed so far, with four more still to be announced.
The Covers Revealed So Far
Each cover reimagines a classic Marvel comic with a Pixar twist, pairing specific films with specific titles. The first eight announced covers are:
- Fantastic Four #13 by David Baldeon (The Incredibles), on sale July 1
- Iron Man #7 by Todd Nauck (WALL-E), on sale July 1
- Avengers: Armageddon #2 by Dave Bardin (Inside Out), on sale July 15
- Infernal Hulk #9 by Humberto Ramos (Ratatouille), on sale July 15
- Amazing Spider-Man #34 by Ryan Stegman (Up), reimagining the legendary Amazing Fantasy #15 cover, on sale August 5
- Fantastic Four #15 by Nicoletta Baldari (A Bug’s Life), on sale August 5
- Avengers: Armageddon #3 by Phil Noto (Brave), on sale August 19
- Doomquest #4 by Paco Medina (Toy Story 5), on sale August 19
The four remaining covers, still to be announced, will accompany the September 2 releases of Avengers: Armageddon #4 and Thor #801, and the September 16 release of X-Men #37. The artists and films for those have not yet been revealed. One clarification worth noting: a ninth already-revealed cover, Fantastic Four #16, also pairs with Toy Story 5, honoring the Fantastic Four #39 cover, and is set for a September 2 release.
Part Of A Bigger Disney-Marvel Tradition
The Pixar 40th Anniversary Variant Covers are the latest in a growing line of Disney-themed homage variants from Marvel Comics. Recent collections have included Toy Story homage covers and Stitch variant covers, both of which were popular with collectors. The Pixar line follows the same formula, pairing top Marvel comic artists with Pixar films to create collectible mashup covers that appeal to fans of both studios.
Pixar was founded in 1986 in Richmond, California, by Edwin Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith, and has produced some of the most beloved animated films in cinema history, from Toy Story and Finding Nemo to Up, Inside Out, and Coco.
