Matthew Lillard Says Daredevil: Born Again’s Final Season Will Be ‘Explosive’

Matthew Lillard, who plays Mr. Charles in Marvel Television’s Daredevil: Born Again, says the show’s third and final season “is going to be explosive, and is really going to rattle a lot of people’s expectations.” The season is expected on Disney+ in 2027.

Lillard made the comments while promoting Carrie, Mike Flanagan’s new Stephen King series for Prime Video, in which he plays school principal Henry Grayle. He was asked why Marvel fans should still be excited for Season 3 now that they know it will be the last.

“I do think it’s in the hands of Dario [Scardapane], who is a great storyteller,” Lillard said. “I think that the show, this season, is going to be explosive, and is really going to rattle a lot of people’s expectations.”

Lillard Calls The Ending A Shocking Move

“I, too, am sad. It was a shocking move,” Lillard said of the decision to end the series. “I think that cast is incredible, and the storytelling is incredible, and I was disappointed, totally.”

On September 21, 2026, word came that Daredevil: Born Again will end with Season 3. Scardapane is also stepping down as showrunner after his contract with Marvel was not renewed. He is exiting in the middle of post-production on the final season, and it is unclear who will see the show through to completion.

Where Mr. Charles Was Left

Lillard joined the series in Season 2 as Mr. Charles, a shady operator who turns up in New York to work with Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). In the Season 2 finale, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) returns home after working with Mr. Charles overseas, and Mr. Charles is revealed to have a new partner in the assassin Bullseye (Wilson Bethel). The two are last seen flying off together on an unknown mission.

Scardapane would not say where that pairing leads, but he told Variety after the finale that “both Mr. Charles and Bullseye are part of our world still” and that “anybody who’s alive at the end of Season 2 can come back.”

The same finale sent Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) to prison after he revealed in court that he is Daredevil, while Fisk was told to step down as mayor and ended the season alone on a beach, stripped of his title. Season 3 does not have a premiere date yet.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Daredevil: Born Again are streaming now on Disney+.
