Michael Giacchino is spending Halloween night at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The Oscar-winning composer will host a Werewolf by Night concert with the LA Phil on Saturday, October 31, at 8 p.m., with the orchestra playing his score live while Marvel Studios’ 2022 special plays on the big screen.
It is a two-part evening. Before the werewolves come out, the night opens with a first look at Headless, a new musical from Giacchino and collaborators Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson.
Werewolf By Night, Live To Picture
After intermission, the LA Phil performs the Werewolf by Night score live to picture under conductor Sarah Hicks. Giacchino did double duty on the special, directing it as well as writing its music. The orchestra’s listing borrows a line from Rolling Stone’s review, which said the special aims to be “a full-on endorphin rush for horror nerds.”
Werewolf by Night premiered on Disney+ in October 2022 as Marvel’s first Special Presentation. Gael García Bernal stars as Jack Russell and Laura Donnelly as Elsa Bloodstone, part of a secret group of monster hunters who gather for a deadly competition over a powerful relic. The special leaned hard into classic horror, and most of it is in black and white.
A First Look At Headless
The first half belongs to Headless, which takes its inspiration from Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The LA Phil describes it as a tale set in the bewitched town audiences have known for more than two centuries, with a twist. It is a fitting pairing for a Halloween program: a headless horseman followed by a werewolf.
The LA Phil calls it a first look, and the program lists Headless as a world premiere running about 45 minutes, with Daniel Klintworth as musical director. Giacchino, who won an Oscar for his score for Pixar’s Up, hosts the whole evening.
Tickets And Details
Tickets start at $39 and are on sale now through the LA Phil’s event page. The concert is part of the orchestra’s Special Concerts series. It is the second Special Concerts program at the hall on Halloween, following a 3 p.m. screening of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
If you cannot make it downtown, Werewolf by Night is streaming on Disney+. And if you are in Los Angeles later in the fall, the El Capitan has Alice in Wonderland’s 4K restoration on its calendar from November 6 to 11.
