Nicolas Cage said the Marvel Cinematic Universe “is becoming a well-funded and glorified WWE” during an onstage conversation at FAN EXPO Dallas on Saturday, September 12, 2026. FAN EXPO posted the clip to its official YouTube channel, and the comments spread widely on September 30 after The Playlist and Variety reported them.
What Cage Said
Cage was asked about the long run of superhero movies. He said the genre “started out, in my view, terrific,” and praised how Marvel’s early films “wove all the threads together” across different characters’ stories, according to TheWrap.
“But lately, I do say this with love, when I see these 50-plus, otherwise intelligent, remarkably gifted thespians putting on these ridiculous outfits and getting ready for the fight … it’s hard for me not to be reminded that the MCU is becoming a well-funded and glorified WWE,” Cage said.
He then set his own recent Marvel series apart. “One of the things I like about Spider-Noir, it wasn’t cutting to the fight. It was a detective story. There was a mystery there,” he said. “I would like to see it get back to telling the stories and not just cutting to the wrestling match.”
Cage And Marvel
Cage has never appeared in the MCU, though he has played Marvel characters, including Ghost Rider in 2007 and 2012. He starred as the title character in Sony’s live-action Spider-Noir, which was canceled at Prime Video after a single eight-episode season.
