Pixar’s New Film Gatto Gets Its First Teaser In Front Of Toy Story 5 — And Disney Has A Big Trailer Week Planned

Pixar has officially pulled back the curtain on its next original film. The studio released the first teaser trailer for Gatto this week, timed just ahead of Toy Story 5’s arrival in theaters, where the teaser will play on the big screen. You can watch the teaser at TheWrap.

What Is Gatto?

Gatto is Pixar’s 32nd animated feature and the next original film from Luca director Enrico Casarosa, who reunites with Luca producer Andrea Warren for a story set in the canals of Venice, Italy. Mark Ruffalo voices Nero, a black stray cat surviving in one of the most superstitious cities in the world, while Laurence Fishburne voices Rocco, the ruthless feline mob boss to whom Nero is indebted. The official logline reads: “Indebted to a feline mob boss, a black cat named Nero finds himself forced to forge an unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose.”

That unexpected friendship is with Maya, a young human street musician who is new to Venice. Adding to the fun, Nero’s tail has a musically driven mind of its own. The teaser leans into the film’s mob-movie comedy, opening with Rocco interrogating a nervous cat over some missing tuna.

A Painterly Leap For Pixar

Visually, Gatto is a genuine departure. The film blends a 2D hand-painted style with computer animation, making every frame look like a moving painting, with the canals of Venice flowing in watercolor waves. When Pixar first showed animation tests at the Annecy festival, the footage was so painterly that audiences assumed they were looking at concept art until it started moving. Casarosa, the Oscar-nominated director of both Luca and the beloved short La Luna, has made Italian settings his signature, and Venice’s moody, labyrinthine atmosphere is a perfect canvas.

Gatto opens in theaters March 5, 2027, a date Disney moved up from its original summer 2027 slot.

A Big Trailer Week For Disney

The Gatto teaser caps a huge stretch of first looks from the Walt Disney Company. In the same week, Walt Disney Animation Studios released the first trailer and poster for Hexed, its 65th animated feature arriving this November, and Toy Story 5’s theatrical debut on June 19 will put the Gatto teaser in front of what is expected to be one of the biggest audiences of the year. Both Gatto and Hexed will also be previewed at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival later this month.
