Kingdom Hearts 4 is back. Square Enix dropped a brand-new trailer for the long-awaited sequel during the June 9 Nintendo Direct, giving fans the most substantial look at the game since its original 2022 reveal.
The trailer is the first major update on Kingdom Hearts 4 in nearly four years. Fans have waited patiently through development silence, a handful of scattered screenshots, and even the cancellation of the spin-off mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link. Today, the wait for new footage finally ended.
A New Look at Sora in Quadratum
The new footage puts Sora in the middle of a modern urban environment that closely resembles Tokyo’s Shibuya district. This is Quadratum, the realistic world first teased in the 2022 announcement. Sora looks older here, with a grittier visual style that marks a big shift for the franchise.
The combat looks fast and fluid. Sora swings across buildings using his Keyblade, battles Heartless in busy city streets, and goes up against a massive dark creature looming over the skyline. One sequence shows him jumping off a car mid-air and getting slammed through a skyscraper window. The scale of these encounters is unlike anything the series has shown before.
The trailer also brings back familiar faces. Donald, Goofy, and representatives from Organization XIII appear in-game for the first time. Strelitzia, who appeared briefly in the original reveal, shows up again. A scene featuring two hooded figures talking in the rain adds more mystery to the story.
Coming to Nintendo Switch 2 at Launch
The biggest platform news from the trailer is the Switch 2 confirmation. Kingdom Hearts 4 will launch day and date on Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. That makes it the first mainline Kingdom Hearts title to arrive natively on a Nintendo console on day one.
Previous Kingdom Hearts games came to Nintendo Switch only as cloud versions, which frustrated many fans. Square Enix appears to be correcting that with both a native Switch 2 collection of the earlier titles and a day-one release for Kingdom Hearts 4.
No Release Date Yet
The trailer did not include a release date or even a release window. That is a disappointment, but the new footage alone is a major moment for the fanbase. Development is clearly moving forward, and Square Enix has now shown the most complete look at Kingdom Hearts 4 to date.
