Savi’s Workshop Debuts New Protection And Defense Hilts And Blade Effects

Savi's Workshop at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge

Savi’s Workshop at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge now offers a new series of its “Protection and Defense” hilt theme, along with upgraded lightsaber blades. The update arrived October 5 at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland: the new hilts come in white finishes with gold detailing, and the blade upgrades apply no matter which theme you choose.

Castle Time Adventures filmed the full build at Disney’s Hollywood Studios earlier this year, before the new effects arrived, from picking parts and kyber crystals to the final activation.

A New Look For Protection And Defense

Protection and Defense was already one of the four hilt themes offered year-round. The new series swaps in white finishes and rich gold detailing, with ancient Jedi iconography meant to celebrate the High Republic, the era when the Jedi Order stood as a symbol of peace and hope across the galaxy.

The build itself works the same way. You pick your theme with one of Savi’s Gatherers outside the workshop, assemble your hilt from a box of parts matched to that theme, and then connect it to a 31-inch blade.

What The Upgraded Blades Can Do

Every lightsaber chassis and blade now has a thermal cutting effect, a spinning effect and deflection effects, along with upgraded audio and smoother blade activation.

There is one more trick. Pair the lightsaber with special “cracked” kyber crystals and a quick flick of the wrist unlocks a color-change effect, meant to show the struggle between the light side and the dark side of the Force. Disney hasn’t said how those crystals are sold or what they cost, and the Savi’s booking pages at both resorts still list only blue, green, violet and red crystals for the build.

Price And Reservations

Purchase is required at both parks, and advance reservations are highly encouraged. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, a build costs $274.99 per lightsaber, plus tax, with full payment due when you book. Only the builder and one guest can enter the experience area there, at least one person in the party must be 14 or older, and the experience is recommended for ages 5 and up.

At Disneyland Park, it’s $249.99 per lightsaber, plus tax, paid when you arrive, and builders may bring two guests. Reserved builds run daily from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Before that, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the workshop hosts the complimentary walk-up Youngling Saber Building Expo, where kids can try building a saber without having to buy one.

At either resort, custom lightsabers are nonrefundable and don’t qualify for discounts. A carrying case comes with each saber, and extra customization pieces are sold at Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities.
