Disney has released a second version of the concept art for the Welcome to Monstropolis lobby, and it does not match the art that went on display at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on September 25. The room inside the Glob Theater is the same, but the monster chandeliers and one of the show posters from the art first shown inside Walt Disney Presents are nowhere to be seen in the new image.
New Chandeliers And A New Poster
The lighting is the biggest change. The art shown in Walt Disney Presents had chandeliers built like monsters, each with a ring of eyeballs and a jagged row of teeth. The new version trades them for ornate chandeliers with round glass bulbs on curling arms, each finished with a green glass bowl at the bottom.
The poster on the back wall to the left of the concessions stand is different too. The first art showed a parody poster for “Silence of the Cribs.” In its place is a blue monster in sunglasses playing a keyboard, with “Noodles” and the Glob name printed near the bottom. The wall behind the stand is also plainer, with less of the pattern of monster faces that covered it in the first version.
Most of the room carries over. The red and gold Monster Concessions stand is still the centerpiece, the “Little Scare Machine” poster still hangs to its right, screens reading “Welcome to Monstropolis” line the right wall, and red curtains still frame the upper level along that side. Disney has not said which version will be built or why the art changed, and the finished room could end up looking different from both.
The Glob Theater Exterior
Disney also released the Glob Theater exterior art that went on display alongside the lobby art. The marquee bills the show as “Welcome to Monstropolis, A Scarefree Theatrical Extravaganza,” with Sulley and Mike Wazowski greeting guests on a red carpet out front. A banner on the clock tower beside the marquee reads “The Monstropolis Department of Human Relations Welcomes You!”
That department is part of the land’s story. Monstropolis is inviting humans into the city for the first time, an event the monsters call H.U.M.A.N. Day, short for “Humans Understanding Monsters Are Nice.”
What The Show Is
Imagineers revealed the show at D23 in August. Chris Beatty, Vice President at Walt Disney Imagineering, said the monsters will introduce humans to Monstropolis and highlight how similar monsters and humans really are. “Mike and Sulley will be our hosts,” Beatty said. “Sulley has been working on a small, homespun show, but Mike, ever the showman, has a few surprises up his sleeve that he thinks will bring down the house. Hopefully not literally.”
The show takes its title from “Welcome to Monstropolis,” a new song by Disney Legend Randy Newman and the first he has written for a Disney theme park. Parts of Monstropolis will open in 2027 while work continues on the land’s door coaster. Disney has not announced an exact opening date for the land or the show.
