The Walt Disney World Railroad closes on September 28 for refurbishment. Disney’s attraction page says the railroad will temporarily close for routine refurbishment beginning that day and is expected to reopen in November 2026, without naming a return date.
It Has Already Been Running Short
The railroad has not made its full circuit since July 7, 2025. Disney’s own listing states that to make way for the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom’s history, the railroad is operating under a modified route that excludes Frontierland, running as a shuttle between the Main Street, U.S.A. station and the Fantasyland station only. Frontierland Station closed that day because the track there runs through the construction site for Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land.
So September 28 takes away what was left. The Grand Circle Tour covers a mile and a half and takes about twenty minutes, and guests have been getting a there-and-back trip between two stations instead for more than a year.
It Takes Out The Back Half Of Halloween
September 28 lands in the middle of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party season, which runs through Halloween night. The train will be unavailable for every remaining party date, including the three still on sale on September 24, September 29 and October 25, and for every regular October day at Magic Kingdom.
The Fantasyland station, known as Storybook Circus Station for the corner of the land it sits in, continues to serve as a trick or treat location during the party. The trains stop, but that stop does not.
The Railroad Is Overdue For This
Before the TRON closure, the railroad took a closure of roughly a month every year between at least 2013 and 2017. It has not had a routine refurbishment since it came back in December 2022, which makes this the first in nearly four years.
Long Closures Are Not New Here
The railroad went down on December 3, 2018 for TRON Lightcycle / Run construction, because the track running around Tomorrowland had to be pulled up and rerouted through a new tunnel. It did not reopen to guests until December 23, 2022, and Disney never announced the date in advance. Guests simply found it running one morning.
The railroad has been part of Magic Kingdom since the park opened on October 1, 1971.
Also Closing
Tiana’s Bayou Adventure closes November 2 for its first refurbishment since opening, with a December target, so the railroad’s expected return and Tiana’s departure land within days of each other. Through September 27 the shuttle runs as normal.
