Two balloons floating over a Magic Kingdom construction site may have just given away how big Villains Land is going to be. Footage in the new episode of We Call It Imagineering, Disney’s behind-the-scenes series, shows Imagineers flying height-test balloons above the site and then walking the park to document what guests will see, and the balloons rise well above the nearby Haunted Mansion and the peaks of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Balloon tests are a standard Imagineering tool. Crews raise balloons to the exact planned height of unbuilt structures, then check sightlines from around the park to judge what will be visible and what needs to stay hidden. The episode, titled Disney Parkitecture, follows project teams doing exactly that for both Villains Land and Piston Peak National Park.
Which Balloon Is Which
The blue balloon is likely the marker for Maleficent’s fortress, with the teal balloon marking the high point of the Magic Mirror dark ride. Disney does not label the balloons in the episode, so neither reading is confirmed.
What is not in dispute is the scale. Walt Disney World keeps its themed structures under 200 feet, the height at which federal aviation rules would require warning lights on top, and the fortress is expected to push that boundary. No measured height has been given. For comparison, Cinderella Castle stands 189 feet, and the land’s two highest points look set to rival it.
Where Guests Will See It From
The balloons were visible in the episode from Fantasyland near Mickey’s PhilharMagic and from Tomorrowland near the Tomorrowland Launch Depot shop, which suggests the finished fortress will read from far more of the park than the land’s own footprint. That fits the land Disney has described: a coaster racing through enchanted briar around Maleficent’s mountaintop fortress, and a dark ride hosted by the Magic Mirror in the catacombs beneath the Evil Queen’s palace, both made official at D23 in August.
The episode also shows a Piston Peak sightline check, with an Imagineer walking past the Diamond Horseshoe near the Swiss Family Treehouse to observe the snowy mountain that will top the Cars land. The first Piston Peak balloon test, conducted over a year ago, actually failed, with planned elevations bleeding into neighboring lands, and Imagineering shortened several structures before a follow-up test confirmed the new heights sit correctly against the Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder.
Disney has not announced an opening timeline for Villains Land, and the coaster’s name, ride system, and height requirement all remain unrevealed. But between the concept art and two balloons on strings, the message of the episode is consistent. The Mistress of All Evil is getting a fortress you will see coming from a long way off.
