Water is flowing again at the fountain in front of Spaceship Earth, ending a dry spell of more than a week at EPCOT’s main entrance. BlogMickey.com confirmed the return on August 1, roughly ten days after guests first noticed the basin sitting empty and the water effects switched off.
A Ten Day Dry Spell
The fountain went dormant around July 21, and by the following day the outage had been documented publicly, with photos showing the diamond-patterned centerpiece bare and the surrounding basin drained. Under normal operation, water runs continuously down the structure’s transparent pylons, spills across the patterned circular base, and collects in the basin below. With the water off, guests walking through the entrance turnstiles were greeted by an empty shell instead.
Disney offered no public explanation for the shutdown, and none was expected. The company rarely comments on cosmetic maintenance that does not close an attraction. Guests speculated about the cause, with theories ranging from routine servicing to a simple coin collection, since thousands of pennies had accumulated in the basin over the years and were plainly visible once the water drained away.
A Busy Stretch At The EPCOT Entrance
The dry fountain was only one of several changes at the front of the park this summer. Weeks earlier, Disney cleared the taller trees from the central planter directly in front of Spaceship Earth and replaced them with low white and red flowers, opening up an unobstructed view of the geodesic sphere from the entrance walkway for the first time in years. That sightline may not last, since Disney has historically decorated the same flower bed for the EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival later in the summer.
Just steps away, the World Celebration reflecting pool has been working through its own refurbishment. The fountain itself is a newer addition than many guests assume. It arrived during the 2020 overhaul of the EPCOT entrance plaza, part of the multi-year transformation that reorganized the park into its World Celebration, World Discovery, and World Nature neighborhoods.
Back In Operation
With water running again, the fountain resumes its role as one of the first things guests see on entering the park. Nothing about the feature appears to have changed during the pause, which suggests the shutdown was maintenance rather than the start of a larger project.
The return caps a summer of steady upkeep across EPCOT, where several smaller projects have run at once. We covered the reflecting pool work and the reopening of Der Teddybär in the Germany Pavilion earlier this summer, and more of that pavilion has since gone under scrim.
