Disney’s newly restored Alice in Wonderland is heading back to the big screen in Hollywood. The El Capitan Theatre will screen the 4K restoration of the 1951 classic from Friday, November 6, through Wednesday, November 11, as part of the theater’s Centennial celebration, with a one-night showing of Dumbo mixed in.
Showtimes each day are 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $19 for all ages, and they drop to $8 on Tuesday, November 10, with fees included in both prices. Seats are reserved, and tickets are on sale now on the El Capitan Theatre’s website.
Why This Alice Looks Different
This is not just an old print pulled off a shelf. For the film’s 75th anniversary, the Walt Disney Film Restoration team spent nine months restoring and remastering Alice in Wonderland in 4K. Artists scanned the original nitrate successive exposure negatives, then cleaned up dust, warping and other damage that had built up over the decades.
To keep the colors true to what the original artists intended, the team worked from production artwork kept by the Walt Disney Animation Research Library. Walt Disney Animation Studios veteran Michael Giaimo reviewed the film shot by shot to refine color and brightness.
The restoration has been available at home since May 5, when Alice in Wonderland arrived on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. These screenings are a chance to see that work on a full-size screen at Disney’s own movie palace on Hollywood Boulevard.
Dumbo Gets One Night
The Centennial lineup also includes a single screening of Dumbo on Saturday, November 7, at 7 p.m., celebrating the film’s 85th anniversary. Tickets are $19 for all ages, and seats are reserved.
That gives anyone in Los Angeles that weekend the chance at a Disney double feature at the El Capitan, with Alice in Wonderland earlier in the day and Dumbo that evening. Just note that the Dumbo showing lands at the same 7 p.m. slot as one of the Alice screenings, so you would need to pick an earlier Alice showtime.
A Busy Season At The El Capitan
The Hollywood Boulevard theater is marking 100 years with a mix of new releases and older favorites. Other Disney events are on the calendar too, including a Hexed fan event on November 24.
Alice in Wonderland runs 1 hour and 20 minutes. Showtimes are subject to change, so check the theater’s site before you go.
