The Disneyland license plate for California drivers just cleared a big hurdle. The application for the specialty plate, which will raise money for the state’s children’s hospitals, has finished its review with the Department of Motor Vehicles. The California Health Facilities Financing Authority shared the news in an email update to supporters this week, Laughing Place reports.
That does not mean you can order one yet. A few steps remain, including producing sample plates and securing the rest of the required approvals. Preorders open only after that, and there is still no date for when that will happen.
How The Disneyland Plate Gets On The Road
The plate is a partnership between Disneyland Resort, the California Children’s Hospital Association and the CHFFA, which sits inside the State Treasurer’s Office and is chaired by Treasurer Fiona Ma. It was announced in May, and the application package has since gone through the DMV’s review.
Clearing DMV review is one checkpoint, not the finish line. Under the state’s special plate program, the plate also needs an approved design, and it has to reach 7,500 preorders before production can begin. The design has not been revealed yet.
Walt Disney World fans in Florida have had Disney specialty plates for years, so California fans have been waiting a while for a version of their own. Until now, the closest thing most Disneyland fans could put on a car was a frame, like the free one Disneyland gave Magic Key holders this summer.
What It Will Cost
When preorders do open, a standard sequential plate will cost $50 and a personalized plate $103, plus fees. Renewals run $40 a year for a sequential plate and $83 for a personalized one.
After administrative costs, the money goes into a state fund run by the CHFFA and is awarded to 13 children’s hospitals across California. That group includes Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Rady Children’s Health in Orange County and San Diego, UC Irvine Health Children’s Hospital and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in Oakland and San Francisco. The funds are meant for care that often goes unpaid, like staffing, clinical education and support services for patients and their families.
How To Get In Line
There is no preorder yet, but you can join the interest list on the State Treasurer’s Disneyland license plate page. Signing up gets you email updates on the program, and you can mark whether you plan to preorder a plate as soon as it is available.
With 7,500 preorders required before a single plate is made, how quickly fans order once the window opens will decide how soon the plates start showing up on California roads.
