Marvel’s victory lap comes with homework after all. Avengers: Endgame Encore, the theatrical re-release arriving ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, will include brand new footage setting up December’s event film, Kevin Feige announced on stage during Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con. A trailer for the re-release screened for the room and has been held back from release online.
A Rumor That Largely Held Up
Ahead of the convention, scooper accounts claimed the Encore cut would feature a new intro, bonus scenes and an end sequence connecting directly into Doomsday, running roughly seven minutes longer than the original film. Those specifics were unverified at the time and we said so.
Feige’s announcement does not validate every number in that report, and Marvel has still not detailed the runtime or described the added material precisely. What it does establish is the central claim: this is not a straight reissue. Audiences buying a ticket on September 25 will see something they have not seen before, and that something points at Doomsday.
What Screened In Hall H
The trailer opened not on the film itself but on the audience, showing footage of moviegoers reacting to the portals sequence in theaters in 2019. From there it moved through material Marvel deliberately kept out of the original marketing campaign, including Steve Rogers returning the Infinity Stones to their proper places in the timeline alongside Tony Stark’s warning about the consequences of tampering with time. It closes on a title card reading “The story continues,” followed by exclusive looks at Doomsday.
Feige explained the thinking to the Hall H crowd, saying that 2019 now feels like a long time ago and that the studio wanted to remind audiences what that communal theater experience felt like. The emphasis on crowd reactions rather than on the film’s own imagery makes that pitch fairly literal.
Marvel has kept the trailer offline rather than pushing it out alongside the Doomsday footage, and there is no indication of when it will surface publicly. The studio has two months of runway before the re-release and no obvious reason to spend it early.
A First At This Scale
Re-releases ahead of major sequels are not new for Marvel, but attaching genuinely new connective footage to one is a different proposition. It converts a nostalgia screening into something closer to a prologue, and it gives the studio a way to seed setup for Doomsday without spending screen time on it in December.
Not everyone in the hall was sold. Some reporting from the panel noted that fans who had queued for many hours were hoping for new announcements rather than a re-cut trailer for a film most of them have seen repeatedly. The counterargument is straightforward enough: a rewatch carrying exclusive story material is much harder to skip, which is presumably the entire point.
Avengers: Endgame Encore begins its theatrical run on September 25, a little under three months before Doomsday opens on December 18. The date and title were confirmed earlier this summer, and the campaign has escalated steadily since the first Doomsday trailer arrived ahead of schedule.
