Afterlife With Archie Is Officially Coming To Disney+ In Time For Halloween 2027

Riverdale is going full zombie apocalypse, and Disney+ is footing the bill. Afterlife With Archie has officially been greenlit as a live-action series for the streamer, with a premiere planned just in time for Halloween 2027.

A Horror Take On Riverdale’s Favorite Teens

Based on the fan-favorite Archie Comics horror story, the hour-long drama reimagines Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, and the rest of the gang in an apocalyptic, nightmare-fueled hellscape overrun with zombies. The original comic, created with artist Francesco Francavilla, launched in 2013 and became a cult hit for taking the wholesome world of Riverdale and dropping it into full-blown horror, kicking off with a teen witch’s backfired spell that turns Jughead’s beloved dog into patient zero. The show looks set to lean into that same tonal whiplash.

Fittingly, the project is being developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator of Riverdale and the chief creative officer of Archie Comics, who also wrote the original Afterlife With Archie series. He is joined by executive producers Greg Berlanti and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater, with Warner Bros. Television producing, which notably makes this the studio’s first series for Disney+. Few people are better positioned to translate the material than Aguirre-Sacasa, given that he spent seven seasons proving Riverdale could absorb nearly any genre thrown at it, and he has called the adaptation his ultimate dream project. The series order arrives roughly nine months after the project first landed at the streamer with a script-to-series commitment. LaughingPlace reports the October 2027 window is designed to make the show a Halloween season event for the streamer.

Disney+ Keeps Swinging On Originals

An R-rated-adjacent zombie drama is not the first thing most people associate with Disney+, but the streamer has been steadily widening its slate with Hulu content folded into the app and bigger swings on originals. It joins a development lineup that spans everything from prestige dramas to nostalgia plays like the recently ordered Mickey Mouse Club reboot pilot, which starts production this month.

Casting, episode count, and a specific premiere date have not been announced yet. With production presumably ramping up over the next year, expect those details to arrive well before the ghouls descend on Riverdale in fall 2027.
