Avengers: Endgame Passes Avatar To Become The Highest-Grossing Movie Ever Again

Hawkeye, War Machine, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Nebula, Rocket, Scott Lang and Natasha Romanoff stand together in a still from Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame is the highest-grossing movie of all time again. With the Avengers Endgame: Encore re-release still in theaters, the 2019 Marvel Studios film has reached an estimated $2.9255 billion worldwide, compared with $2.9237 billion for Avatar. That puts Endgame ahead by about $1.8 million.

Marvel Studios marked the moment on X on Sunday, October 4, with a short video and a familiar line.

The Encore Re-Release Pushed It Over The Top

The record came from the re-release. Disney and Marvel brought Endgame back to theaters as Avengers Endgame: Encore, with an extended look at Avengers: Doomsday attached, and the reissue has now earned $126 million worldwide, with $36.2 million from the United States and $89.8 million from overseas.

Encore opened at No. 1 in North America with $26.1 million in its first weekend, and it started around the world with an $86 million global opening that set re-release records. Its second weekend was much smaller. The film took in $4.4 million in the United States, down 81 percent, and $18.8 million worldwide, with $14.4 million of that coming from 52 international markets.

In China, Encore has earned $21.3 million and was the weekend’s top imported movie, and it also finished as the top imported title in Indonesia, Vietnam, Ecuador and Bolivia. No re-release has ever earned more across Latin America, where Encore has taken in $6.1 million in Mexico and $3.1 million in Brazil, and it has made $3.8 million in India.

Endgame And Avatar Have Traded The Crown Before

This is the second time Endgame has held the top spot. Avatar held the record for 10 years until Endgame passed it during its first run in 2019. A 2021 Avatar re-release, timed ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water, put James Cameron’s film back on top, and it has now been through five re-releases.

Either way, the record stays with Disney. Avatar came out through 20th Century Fox, which Disney bought in 2019, and seven of the 10 biggest movies ever now belong to the company.

In the United States, Endgame’s running total now sits at $894.6 million. That is No. 3 on the domestic all-time chart, behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Its overseas total of $2.03 billion ranks No. 2 all time.

Next Up Is Avengers: Doomsday

Endgame ended the Infinity Saga, and Avengers: Doomsday picks the story up from there when it opens December 18. Anthony and Joe Russo, who directed Endgame, are back to direct it.

“Many years later, as we started to conceive a road forward that would evolve into Doomsday, it just begged of us: ‘You really need to pick the story up from where you left it in Endgame,'” Anthony Russo said last month.

Doomsday puts the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Talokan, the Thunderbolts, the Wakandans and the X-Men in the same movie for the first time. Across 38 films, Marvel Studios has now passed $35 billion at the worldwide box office, more than any other film franchise.
