A small orange robot built to look like a character from Pixar’s Cars has been shown waving drivers into parking spaces, and Disney is exploring whether technology like it could help run theme park parking lots. The robot appeared in a video at Disney Accelerator Demo Day on November 3, as part of work FieldAI is doing with Disney Experiences Technology and Walt Disney Imagineering R&D.
The footage, shot from the front of a car, shows the robot standing in an open parking area. It has a cartoon face with big eyes and a smile, reflective yellow safety-vest stripes on its body and a green arrow sign mounted on its roof. Two arms tipped with glowing wands stick out from its sides, the same way a parking attendant would point cars toward an open space. The video shows the orange helper in a lot lined with traffic cones, waving drivers in with its light wands.
Why Disney Started In The Parking Lot
Parking is where a park day begins, and it is also a place that never sits still. Cars arrive in waves, guests walk between the rows and the weather can change by the hour. Disney says FieldAI is exploring how robots could support parking operations across complex terrain and unpredictable weather, with the goal of improving the work environment for Cast Members and giving guests a more consistent experience.
That is a harder job than it sounds for a robot. A parking lot has no fixed route, and every driver reacts a little differently to a signal. The robot has to read the lot as it changes, which is the kind of problem FieldAI says its software is built for.
What FieldAI Brings To The Project
FieldAI builds robot intelligence designed to help different types of robots operate safely in changing environments, including places with no prior maps, GPS or pre-planned routes. The company sells the navigation brain rather than the robot bodies, so its software can run on many kinds of machines. The Cars robot was shown in a video rather than on stage, so how close it is to working in a real lot has not been shown publicly.
A Possible Link To Character Robots
The parking work may not stop at the parking lot. Disney says Walt Disney Imagineering R&D is also working with FieldAI to explore how advanced situational awareness and navigation could inform the future development of character-based robotic experiences in its parks. A robot that can move safely around cars and people in a busy lot is learning some of the same skills a character robot would need to walk through a crowd.
Disney has already been showing off robotic characters in its parks, and parking would be a different kind of job for them, a behind-the-scenes one that guests would meet before they ever reach the gate. What Is Not Known Yet
Disney has not named a park or a timeline for parking robots, and it describes the work as something it is exploring. Bonnie Rosen, general manager of the Disney Accelerator, said this year’s companies brought “a clear point of view on how these technologies can work responsibly for people.” Whether an orange Cars robot ever greets guests at a real parking lot will likely come down to how well it handles a busy day, and next year’s Demo Day may show how far the idea has come.
