Chad Powers Season 3 Would Head To The National Championship, Michael Waldron Says

Glen Powell as Chad Powers in the Hulu series Chad Powers

Chad Powers Season 3 has not been ordered yet, but co-creator Michael Waldron already knows where it would go. If Hulu brings the comedy back, the new season would follow the South Georgia Catfish into the national championship, finishing a story he and star Glen Powell planned in three parts around a single college football season.

“A story like this certainly doesn’t want to overstay its welcome,” Waldron told Variety. The first season covered Russ Holloway’s fall from grace and the first half of the Catfish’s season, and the second followed the team’s run toward the playoffs. That leaves the title game, which could mean a rematch with Georgia, Waldron’s alma mater, or Texas, where Powell went to school.

“Nothing’s guaranteed,” Waldron said, adding that just as Season 2 tried to subvert the usual sports story of rise, fall and rise again, “we’ll try and keep doing that.” He also joked that if Hulu wants even more after that, “I guess Chad can join the basketball team or something.”

Season 2 Found Its Audience

Season 2 gave Hulu solid numbers. All six episodes landed on September 3, and the premiere drew 2.86 million U.S. viewers, according to Nielsen. That ranked third among returning scripted series on Hulu, behind FX’s The Bear and Hulu’s Paradise.

Over its first 28 days, Season 2 averaged 2.75 million U.S. viewers per episode, close to the 2.96 million average for Season 1. Critics warmed up considerably too. The show’s Rotten Tomatoes critics score jumped from 60% for Season 1 to 93% for Season 2.

Waldron directed four of the six new episodes and pushed the season toward a darker, more propulsive tone, with handheld camerawork he compared to Point Break and Uncut Gems.

Where Season 3 Would Pick Up

Spoilers for the Season 2 finale follow. The season ended on several cliffhangers. Russ and Ricky finally kiss after the Texas game, only for Coach Jake Hudson to walk in on them, and the episode cuts away before revealing whether he saw Russ without his Chad disguise. Danny has also exposed Russ’ secret to booster Tricia Yeager, who now wants Russ and Danny living on her ranch so Russ keeps playing as Chad.

Waldron said the story of Gerry, the unhinged backup quarterback played by Colton Ryan, is far from over. “Season 3, if we get to make it, would have to pick up right after this episode,” he said.

Waldron has plenty else on his plate. He is co-writing Avengers: Doomsday, which opens in December, and Marvel Studios has him writing a Nova movie in its early stages. Seasons 1 and 2 of Chad Powers are streaming now on Hulu.
