A Nova movie is officially in the works at Marvel Studios. Sources tell Deadline that Michael Waldron, the creator of Loki and Chad Powers, is developing a feature film built around the cosmic hero. Insiders stress the project is still in early development, but Waldron is on board to write the script with an eye toward directing if the film moves forward.
From Shelved Series To Feature Film
The report is a notable turn in a story that has been swirling for the past week. Waldron’s name first became attached to Nova when his Writers Guild of America card leaked with the project listed among his credits, sparking reports that he had joined a Nova television series. Marvel pushed back on those series reports, and Deadline’s new reporting explains why: the pitch Waldron is tackling is a movie, not a show.
Marvel Studios had originally been developing Nova as a Disney+ series, first with Moon Knight writer Sabir Pirzada penning the script. That version was ultimately shelved in 2025 as the studio reevaluated its streaming slate. Nova now becomes the second announced MCU television project to shift toward a feature film, following Armor Wars.
Who Is Nova?
In the comics, Richard Rider is an ordinary teenager who inherits the powers of a dying member of the Nova Corps, the intergalactic police force introduced to MCU audiences in Guardians of the Galaxy. As Nova, Rider gains enhanced strength, flight, and energy projection, becoming one of Marvel’s premier cosmic heroes. The character debuted in 1976 and has long been a fan favorite pick for the franchise’s next space-faring adventure.
Waldron is one of Marvel’s most trusted writers, having penned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and co-written this December’s Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel Studios and representatives for Waldron did not comment on the report. If Nova moves ahead, it would signal that the cosmic side of the MCU will continue well beyond the Multiverse Saga.
