Disney+ and Disney Channel are diving back into the world of mermaids. The streamer has officially ordered a pilot for Aquamarine, a series adaptation of the beloved 2006 teen fantasy romantic comedy. And in a welcome surprise for fans of the original film, Emma Roberts is returning to the world of Aquamarine as both a guest star and executive producer.
Emma Roberts Returns to Aquamarine
According to Variety, Disney+ has handed a pilot order to Aquamarine, developed by The Bold Type creator Sarah Watson and produced for both Disney+ and Disney Channel. Emma Roberts, who starred in the 2006 original as Claire Brown, will reprise that role as a guest star and serve as an executive producer alongside the film’s original director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum and producer Susan Cartsonis.
The new series centers on a teenage girl named Coral who moves to a seaside town and begins uncovering the truth about her mother’s disappearance, ultimately discovering her mother was a mermaid and awakening magical powers within herself. The logline promises secrets beneath the waves and a mystery-driven narrative that puts a fresh spin on the original film’s lighthearted magic.
A Fan-Favorite Property Gets a Second Life
The original Aquamarine became a cult favorite among the generation that grew up watching it, making this revival a savvy move for Disney+ as the platform continues to mine beloved properties for new scripted content. Having Emma Roberts involved on both sides of the camera lends the project instant credibility and a direct connection to what made the original so memorable.
