Drawn To Wonderland Turns Mary Blair’s Alice Concept Art Into An Indoor Playground

Disney rendering of Drawn to Wonderland, the Alice in Wonderland themed indoor playground at Disney's Hollywood Studios

Drawn to Wonderland is an indoor playground built entirely out of Mary Blair’s concept art for Alice in Wonderland, and it is the only part of The Magic of Disney Animation aimed squarely at small children. It opens with the rest of the attraction on September 14 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Four Corners Of Wonderland

The space is split into recognizable settings from the film. Children can move through the Mad Tea Party and the Mad Hatter’s house, into the Queen of Hearts’ rose garden, and on to the Cheshire Cat’s Tulgey Wood, the strange forest of oversized creatures Alice wanders into after leaving the path. Oversized flowers and larger than life set pieces fill the gaps between them, and the whole room is built for climbing, wandering and general noise rather than for a queue.

Disney says the area is meant to give families somewhere to stop, move and recharge in the middle of a park day without stepping out of the story, and it was designed for the youngest guests specifically. Disney’s own description of the pitch is a place to climb, wander and create their own adventure around every corner.

Why Mary Blair

Blair is one of the most recognizable stylists in Disney history, and her flat shapes and clashing color blocks are the reason the 1951 Alice in Wonderland looks the way it does. She was named a Disney Legend posthumously in 1991, and her work already runs through the parks: she designed it’s a small world for the 1964 New York World’s Fair before it moved to Disneyland, and the 90 foot mural that wraps the elevator core inside Disney’s Contemporary Resort is hers, finished for that hotel’s 1971 opening.

Disney’s reasoning for picking Alice over any other film is that the story is built on curiosity and wandering off, which suits a room designed to be explored rather than watched. Bold colors, whimsical shapes and Blair’s unmistakable style carry through every corner of the playground.

Where It Sits In The Building

Drawn to Wonderland is one of four named experiences inside The Magic of Disney Animation, alongside the Off the Page! character encounters, the Olaf Draws! drawing classes and the Once Upon A Studio Theater. Disney has also confirmed an enchanted art gallery where characters in the artwork animate as guests pass, using animation created specifically for the space.

All of it sits inside a building capped with Mickey’s Sorcerer Hat and modeled on the Roy E. Disney Animation Building in Burbank, in a courtyard that now carries character statues installed over the past few weeks. The outdoor area itself opened in May, while the attraction stayed behind walls. Full details of the interior arrived in Disney’s own preview on Wednesday, five days out from opening.
