Disney+ has a new Japanese horror series on the way, and it has some serious genre names behind the camera. Night Tales Club, a six-part supernatural anthology starring Takayuki Yamada, will premiere on Disney+ and Hulu in January 2027, and its directors include Kiyoshi Kurosawa of Cure and Takashi Shimizu, the filmmaker behind Ju-On.

Disney+ Japan released a first teaser for the series alongside the announcement.

A Reward For Proof Of The Unexplained

Yamada plays Hojo, a successful businessman who is obsessed with the inexplicable and serves as the show’s storyteller. Hojo is convinced that ghosts, curses and other paranormal events are “bugs,” glitches that point to a hidden conspiracy. To get to the truth, he offers 20 million yen in gold (about $126,000) to anyone who will come to his gathering, the Night Tales Club, with a firsthand account of the supernatural and proof to back it up.

Each of the six episodes is one of those accounts. The stories come from author Ichi Sawamura’s collection of short horror stories, and Sawamura also adapted the material for the screen.

“As the original author of these stories, I feel an enormous sense of surprise and joy that they will soon be available on screen to scare audiences around the world,” Sawamura said.

A Different Director For Every Story

The anthology format lets each episode take on its own feel, and the series is using it to the fullest by giving every story a different director. Kurosawa, whose credits also include Wife of a Spy, and Shimizu, who also made The Inugami Family, each take one episode.

They are joined by Shinzo Katayama of Gannibal and The Human Vapor, along with Yukiko Sode of Aristocrats, Yuichiro Sakashita of I Can’t Cry With Your Face and Yosuke Nakamura of Higuma!! Kenji Nakajima, known for The Naked Director and Tokyo Swindlers, directs the sequences built around Hojo himself. Yusuke Wakabayashi and Teruhisa Yamamoto are producing.

Night Tales Club adds to a growing slate of Japanese originals on Disney+, which already streams Gannibal and the mystery series Land of Tanabata. It also joins American Horror Story, which FX just renewed for a 14th season, among the horror anthologies on Disney’s streaming lineup.

Disney has not announced an exact premiere date yet, only that the series arrives in January 2027.
