Kevin Feige has confirmed what Marvel’s release calendar has been implying for months. Speaking to Empire in the wake of Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the studio head said no film will arrive between Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, leaving a full year of empty theatrical space between the two halves of the Multiverse Saga’s conclusion.
A Deliberate Year Of Silence
Doomsday opens on December 18, 2026. Secret Wars follows on December 17, 2027. Under the plan Feige described, nothing from Marvel Studios lands in between.
Feige framed the gap as a choice rather than a scheduling accident. He told the magazine that the studio always aims for quality, but that pushing out a high volume of work leaves the team “spread thin”, and that he was unwilling to accept that going into a film as consequential as an Avengers picture.
That reasoning echoes what Bob Iger began saying publicly in 2023, when the then-CEO acknowledged that Marvel had lost some focus by making too much. The studio’s output has been shrinking ever since, and the current calendar is the clearest expression of it. When Disney reorganized its theatrical slate last year, several untitled Marvel dates were quietly removed or reassigned to other divisions entirely.
What That Means In Practice
The gap is not unprecedented but it is close. The stretch between The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July 2025 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day this Friday already represented the longest run without an MCU feature since the pandemic-era pause between Spider-Man: Far From Home and Black Widow.
A second year-long gap immediately after Doomsday means audiences will go into Secret Wars having seen exactly one Marvel Studios film in the preceding twelve months. Whether that concentrates attention or dissipates it is the bet Feige is making. Television and streaming will carry the load in the interim.
A Telling Two Words About 2028
Feige also used the Empire conversation to characterize Secret Wars as a launch pad rather than an ending, describing the comics storyline as something that sets up whatever comes next rather than closing a door. He then said landing the two Avengers films was about setting up 2028, and noted that two of those 2028 titles have been revealed to date: Ghost Rider and Black Panther 3.
Empire flagged that qualifier, and it is worth flagging again. Saying two have been revealed so far implies there are others not yet announced. Disney has kept several 2028 dates marked for untitled Marvel features, which leaves room for at least one more addition to a year that will be defined by whatever Secret Wars leaves standing.
