Listen When Sad Arrives August 28 After The Jonas Brothers Debuted It At Madison Square Garden

Listen When Sad arrives on Friday, August 28, and the Jonas Brothers gave it away early. The trio played the unreleased track live on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden, opening the first of three sold out shows on The Burning Up Tour All Over Again with a song nobody in the building had heard before.

A Deliberate Trip Back To 2008

Nick Jonas explained the sound to the crowd before they played it, saying the band had tapped back into “the sound of the early 2000s” and naming Switchfoot, Taking Back Sunday and Dashboard Confessional as direct influences on the record. The reference points are not accidental for a tour built entirely around a 2008 run.

The bigger detail is who produced it. The brothers reunited with John Fields, the producer behind their self titled album, A Little Bit Longer and Lines, Vines and Trying Times. That partnership defined the band’s Disney Channel era, and this is the first time the four of them have worked together in a studio since 2009.

A Little Bit Longer, the album that produced Burnin’ Up and the tour this run is named after, hit number one on the Billboard 200 and sold more than two million copies. Bringing back the man who made it is the clearest signal yet that the new material is meant to sit alongside those songs rather than beside the band’s more recent pop output.

Two Sets, Two Decades

Opening night was structured as two distinct halves. The first was a dedicated Burning Up set that started with That’s Just The Way We Roll and worked through Burnin’ Up, S.O.S. and Lovebug. The second covered the twenty years that followed, pulling in Cake by the Ocean, Jealous, Waffle House and Love Me to Heaven before Listen When Sad closed it out.

The brothers also spoke to the crowd about becoming Disney Legends before leading a Camp Rock singalong. Their longtime security chief Big Rob, a fixture of the band’s Disney Channel years and a character in his own right to fans of that era, was in attendance as well.

The Legends Weekend Is Still Paying Off

The timing is tight by design. Kevin, Joe and Nick were inducted as Disney Legends at the Honda Center on August 16, and the tour announcement followed almost immediately. Four days later they were onstage at Madison Square Garden debuting new music, with the last of the three Garden dates to play tonight.

We covered the full 45 city tour routing when it was announced, running from Boston in late September through Newark in December. The band is expected to keep Listen When Sad in the set for the rest of the run, which means the studio version lands on Friday with a week of live performances already behind it.

Their label has framed the single as a deliberate return to the sound the band started with. Whether that extends to a full album has not been addressed, and no further releases have been announced.
