Marvel Rivals is going full whodunit. NetEase and Marvel Games revealed Season 9: The Mystery of Thebes during a livestream Tuesday, confirming the update launches this Friday, July 10, with X-Men fan favorite Jubilee joining the roster. The reveal trailer centers on Apocalypse, who monologues about his quest for godhood before being abruptly impaled by an unseen attacker, kicking off a season-long murder mystery, as detailed by Game Informer.
Jubilee Arrives As A Strategist
Jubilee joins as a Strategist, the game’s support class, using pyrotechnic plasma bursts that heal teammates and damage enemies. She can hover briefly to avoid damage, drop healing bubbles for allies, and her Ultimate knocks back groups of enemies, ideally right off a cliff. The timing is no accident. In the game’s lore, Jubilee serves as Apocalypse’s Horseman of Famine, hoping the ancient mutant can free her son Shogo from his dragon form, and it all lands while X-Men ’97 Season 2 has Apocalypse dominating Disney+ every week.
The Hood, A New Map, And A Massive Rework
Season 9 also brings a new Egypt-themed convoy map, Thebes, arriving July 23, while The Hood, the Mephisto-cloaked villain audiences met in Ironheart, joins the roster in the Season 9.5 mid-season update expected in early August. Beyond the new faces, NetEase is shipping one of the biggest systemic shakeups in the game’s history, with a ground-up rework of the Team-Up abilities system and a major Black Widow overhaul that together touch a huge share of the roster.
The bigger picture here is Marvel synergy working exactly as intended: a vampiric Jubilee and a resurgent Apocalypse in the hero shooter while the same characters headline Marvel Animation’s flagship series.
