Matt Smith is keeping things appropriately mysterious about his role in Star Wars: Starfighter, and the quote he dropped has already got fans theorizing.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast while promoting House of the Dragon Season 3, the British actor confirmed he has already filmed his scenes for the movie, then dropped a cryptic tease about the character he is playing: “He’s a pretty interesting guy… or girl. Who knows? I can’t say too much,” per SuperHeroHype. It is the kind of quote that sends Star Wars fans into full speculation mode, and almost certainly, that is exactly the intent.
Who Is Matt Smith?
Smith is no stranger to genre work. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of the Eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who, a role that made him a household name in sci-fi circles, and more recently appeared in House of the Dragon as Daemon Targaryen. This also is not his first brush with the galaxy far, far away: Smith was famously cast in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker before his character was rewritten out of the film, making Starfighter a long-awaited fulfillment of that near-miss.
What We Know About Star Wars: Starfighter
Star Wars: Starfighter is the Shawn Levy-directed standalone film starring Ryan Gosling, an entirely original adventure set roughly five years after The Rise of Skywalker in a period never before explored on screen. Smith was announced in one of the film’s villain roles, with Mia Goth playing another antagonist, and the cast also includes Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Flynn Gray, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings. Production wrapped late last year, and the film opens in theaters May 28, 2027. What remains a genuine mystery is exactly who, or what, Smith is playing.
Fan Theories Already Starting
Whether Smith is playing a shapeshifter, a droid with a distinct personality, or something else entirely is anyone’s guess. In the Star Wars universe, that kind of deliberate ambiguity about gender or identity could mean a species without clear binary presentation, or a character whose identity is central to the plot.
