Pixar’s Toy Story 5 has delivered one of the biggest animated openings in box office history, and the final weekend numbers confirm it was every bit as massive as the hype suggested.
Preview Night and Opening Day
Toy Story 5 earned $17.5 million in Thursday night previews, the best preview performance of 2026 and the second-best ever for an animated film, trailing only Incredibles 2‘s $18.5 million. Friday’s full opening day brought in $71 million from 4,425 North American theaters, which included that $17.5 million preview haul, making it the biggest single-day gross of 2026 to date.
Opening Weekend Totals
The full three-day domestic opening weekend landed at $160 million, according to Variety, shattering the franchise record set by Toy Story 4‘s $120 million debut in 2019. It also ranks as the second-best domestic opening weekend ever for an animated film, behind only Incredibles 2‘s $182.7 million.
Globally, the film opened to $152 million overseas for a worldwide debut of $312 million, the biggest global opening ever for a Pixar film, surpassing Inside Out 2‘s $295 million start. It is also the biggest worldwide opening of 2026, narrowly edging out Universal’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie. The film carries a reported production budget of $250 million.
About the Film
Directed by Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton, Toy Story 5 follows Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), and the rest of Bonnie’s toys as their world is upended by Lilypad, a smart tablet voiced by Greta Lee that threatens to replace them entirely. The film also features Conan O’Brien, Craig Robinson, Alan Cumming, Maddie Ziegler, and Bad Bunny. Taylor Swift contributed an original song, “I Knew It, I Knew You,” to the soundtrack.
Critical and Audience Reception
Toy Story 5 holds a 94% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes and earned an A on CinemaScore exit polls, both strong indicators of long-term box office staying power. With numbers like these, the film looks firmly on track to join the billion-dollar club, following in the footsteps of Toy Story 4, which grossed over $1 billion globally in 2019.
