Monstropolis Is Faking Its Brick, And It’s Pretty Convincing

Monstropolis concept art for Disney's Hollywood Studios

Red brick theming is going up on the Monstropolis clock tower. New ground-level photos posted Saturday evening, October 17, by construction photographer bioreconstruct show the brick going onto the tower at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, along with a nearby restroom building whose brick is actually paint on concrete.

Brick theming now covers the faces of the tower, with tan vertical strips running up it, a cream stone cap below the antennas and a white clock face near the top. The building next to it has a cream cornice and a brick band, with tarps still covering its upper section. bioreconstruct noted that more theming is coming to the corners of the tower.

Painted Brick And Scalloped Shingles

The restroom building’s exterior is concrete painted to look like brick, topped with a cream band of sawtooth trim and cream arches over the openings.

Another set of photos shows rows of scalloped shingles in teal, gold and brown, framed by pale stone-colored arches. They appear to be on the same building as the restrooms, which also holds Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, where teal and gold shingles went up earlier this month.

The Gateway Columns Are Still Bare

Not everything is that far along. The gateway into Monstropolis is angled toward Grand Avenue, which bioreconstruct said is meant to separate the two cities: the park’s Los Angeles-themed Grand Avenue and the monster city. His closer photos show the gateway columns have not been themed yet, with scaffolding-covered buildings and a rooftop water tower rising behind a construction wall decorated with Sulley.

Aerial photos last month showed work starting on the entrance plaza, the gateway columns and an octagonal fountain excavation, but from the ground the columns are still bare concrete.

When Monstropolis Opens

Monstropolis is replacing Muppets Courtyard, including Muppet*Vision 3D, and Disney has said parts of the land will open to guests in 2027 while work continues on the Monsters, Inc. door coaster. Disney has not set a specific date for either piece yet.

Elsewhere in the land, Disney’s plans include the Glob Theater, home to a new show called Welcome to Monstropolis that shares its name with a new Randy Newman song. Harryhausen’s Restaurant, the sushi spot where Mike and Celia have their big date in the film, is coming too, along with a souvenir shop called the Scareporium.
