Paul Bettany Blew Out 10 Blood Vessels In His Eye Overacting A VisionQuest Scene

VisionQuest stars James Spader, Paul Bettany, Ruaridh Mollica and Emily Hampshire at New York Comic Con 2026

Paul Bettany pushed a little too hard on one VisionQuest scene and came away with a bloodshot eye that lasted two weeks. On Jimmy Kimmel Live, Bettany said he blew out about 10 blood vessels in his eye while overacting a moment where Vision has a device on his head messing with his brain.

“I was pretending to have a device on my head that is doing something to my brain, and I was just wildly overacting, and I blew out about 10 blood vessels in my eye,” Bettany told Kimmel. He laughed it off as “a lesson in less is more,” and Kimmel then put up a photo of the blood-filled eye for the audience.

Two Weeks Of A Red Eye On Set

The damage did not clear up overnight. Bettany said the eye stayed that way for about two weeks, so the production had to “take it out” of the finished shots. If you have been watching the series and never noticed anything wrong with Vision’s eyes, that is the reason.

He also had a joke ready about the irony of it all. “The irony is the actor playing Vision is kind of myopic, you know,” Bettany said, as Variety reported. “Can’t see a thing when I take my glasses off, which is great, depending on the actor.”

Where VisionQuest Stands On Disney+

VisionQuest is an eight-episode season, with new episodes landing on Disney+ on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. PT. It opened with two episodes on October 13 and kept up double features for its first three weeks, so six are out now. Episode 7 arrives November 3, and the finale follows on November 10, so there is still time to catch up before it wraps.

Bettany stars as the android former Avenger. James Spader is back as Ultron for the first time since Avengers: Age of Ultron, Emily Hampshire plays E.D.I.T.H. and Ruaridh Mollica plays Tommy, also known as Speed. The show had a strong start with critics and was Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes before its premiere.

Bettany has played Vision since Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015, and before that he voiced J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s AI, starting with the first Iron Man. VisionQuest is a spinoff of WandaVision and brings his Vision story back to Disney+ for a full season of his own.
