Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are preparing a re-release of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day with extra footage that includes Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple. More surprises are expected in the added material.
No release date has been set, and neither studio has said how much footage will be added. The film opened July 31 and is still playing in theaters.
Claire Temple’s First Marvel Movie
Dawson played Claire Temple, a nurse who patches up New York’s vigilantes, in the first two seasons of Daredevil, as well as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders. She last played the character in the second season of Luke Cage in 2018.
The re-release would give Claire Temple her first appearance in a Marvel Studios film.
The Scene That Was Cut
Dawson revealed in July that she had shot a scene for Brand New Day that did not make the final cut. Claire was caring for Peter Parker in the hospital when he wakes up. That moment went to Jon Bernthal’s Punisher instead, to give it more emotional weight.
It has not been confirmed that the hospital scene is the Claire Temple footage returning to theaters. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has said a version of the film they tested ran 30 minutes longer than the theatrical cut, though he called the theatrical release his preferred version. “We’re just trying to find the best version of the movie, and to me that is the living, breathing part of the movie,” he said.
A Record Run Gets An Encore
Brand New Day is the highest-grossing film of all time at the domestic box office, and at nearly $2.5 billion worldwide it ranks third globally behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. It took the domestic record from Star Wars: The Force Awakens with $936.7 million.
Sony has used this playbook with Spider-Man before. Spider-Man: No Way Home, which Brand New Day has since passed as Sony’s highest-grossing film, returned to theaters in September 2022 as The More Fun Stuff Version, with 11 minutes of new and extended scenes.
Marvel’s own re-release is also doing well right now. Avengers Endgame: Encore opened at No. 1 this past weekend with $26 million. An extended Brand New Day would give audiences another reason to head back to theaters before Avengers: Doomsday opens on December 18.
