Bob Iger is set for a morning TV sit-down on Disney’s own network. The former Disney CEO will talk with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America on Wednesday, October 21, according to the show’s lineup for the week ahead.
ABC has not said what the conversation will cover.
Out Of The CEO Chair Since March
Iger stepped down as CEO when Josh D’Amaro officially took over on March 18. It capped a second run in the job that began in November 2022, when Disney’s board brought Iger back and removed his hand-picked successor, Bob Chapek.
Chapek is now telling his side of that story in public, which puts a spotlight on anything Iger says about those years.
The Chapek Book Hangs Over The Interview
Chapek’s memoir, Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth, came out September 29, and it does not hold back about the man who chose him and then replaced him.
“I believe the real reason I got fired lay with Iger. From the moment he announced my appointment, he clearly regretted it and seemed to initiate a relentless three-year campaign to push me out,” Chapek wrote, as quoted by TheWrap. Of the pandemic years, he added, “he never missed an opportunity to imply he could do better.”
Chapek also recounts being fired with a phone call, and says that at Iger’s retirement party, Iger never mentioned him by name during his farewell speech. “That moment encapsulates how Iger treated our professional transition,” Chapek wrote.
He has also been talking about decisions from his own time in charge, including his account that Disney weighed eliminating Disneyland annual passes but held back over fears of the backlash.
Whether Roberts asks about any of it is an open question.
