The Prestige Returns To Theaters On 70mm And IMAX For Its 20th Anniversary

The Prestige 20th anniversary re-release poster for 70mm and IMAX screenings January 29

Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige is coming back to theaters on January 29, 2027, and for the first time ever audiences will be able to see it on 70mm film and in IMAX. Walt Disney Studios is bringing it back for the film’s 20th anniversary. The movie first opened 20 years ago today, on October 20, 2006.

The studio marked the anniversary with a new teaser trailer and a new poster. The poster shows a lone figure standing in a foggy field of glowing bulbs, with “70MM Film and IMAX” across the top and the film’s familiar line, “Are you watching closely?”

How You Can See It

It will also play in 35mm and standard digital 2D, Deadline reports. Disney is billing it as a release in select theaters, so check your local theater’s listings for the 70mm and IMAX showings when they post.

Twenty Years Later

The Prestige was a Touchstone Pictures, Warner Bros., Newmarket Films and Syncopy production. Disney released it in North America in 2006 under its Touchstone label, while Warner Bros. handled it overseas. It was made for about $40 million and earned $109 million worldwide, and it picked up Oscar nominations for its art direction and for Wally Pfister’s cinematography. Nolan directed it from a script he wrote with his brother Jonathan Nolan, based on Christopher Priest’s 1995 novel. It runs 130 minutes and was shot on 35mm anamorphic film.

Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale star as Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, two magicians in 1890s London. Their rivalry starts when Angier’s wife Julia, played by Piper Perabo, drowns during a water tank trick after Borden ties her wrists with the wrong knot. Michael Caine plays John Cutter, the stage engineer who works with both men, and Scarlett Johansson plays their assistant Olivia. Rebecca Hall is Borden’s wife Sarah, and David Bowie appears as the physicist Nikola Tesla, with Andy Serkis as his assistant.

The Prestige follows another Disney re-release that has done big business this fall. The Endgame re-release sent Avengers: Endgame back past Avatar as the highest-grossing movie ever.
