Star Wars Battlefront 3 is in development at Electronic Arts, with Respawn and DICE joining forces to make it, according to Variety. In an internal memo on Wednesday, EA told employees the two studios will collaborate on a future project, and multiple sources told the outlet that the project is the next Battlefront game for Lucasfilm.
The news is part of a much larger EA restructuring that includes layoffs of about 3% of its global workforce, roughly 400 people based on the company’s last reported headcount of 14,500.
Respawn And DICE Team Up
The plan was laid out in a memo to EA employees from Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer, and David Tinson, president and COO. They called Battlefield 6 “a great success” and said, “we’ll be bringing together our Respawn and DICE studios to collaborate on a future project.” The memo did not name that project. The Star Wars connection comes from Variety’s sources, and neither EA nor Lucasfilm has announced the game.
Both studios know Star Wars well. DICE built the two modern Star Wars Battlefront games, released in 2015 and 2017, and it is also the studio behind Battlefield. Respawn makes the Star Wars Jedi series and Apex Legends. The project would pair DICE’s large-scale shooter experience with Respawn’s Star Wars storytelling.
The Rest Of EA’s Star Wars And Marvel Slate
Battlefront is one of several Disney-licensed games at EA. The memo said the company remains committed to “our two huge launches coming up,” Marvel’s Iron Man and the next Star Wars Jedi game.
EA also published the turn-based tactics game Star Wars Zero Company, which launched in August.
BioWare Shuts Down
EA is closing BioWare, the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age, after deciding to stop development on a new Mass Effect game. BioWare’s office in Edmonton, Canada, will close. “BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly,” Weber and Tinson wrote. BioWare also made Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: The Old Republic.
The restructuring is EA’s first major move since the company went private this summer. Alongside the cuts, EA said it will keep investing heavily in Apex Legends and has two new EA Sports projects in development, including a social-first, open-world American football experience it calls Project Gridiron.
EA and Lucasfilm have not announced a title, release window or platforms for Battlefront 3. The last new Battlefront game, Star Wars Battlefront II, came out in November 2017.
