New foundations are in at Magic Kingdom where Piston Peak’s snow-capped mountain will rise, according to construction photos Drew Smith shared Wednesday, and more structures are expected in the coming months.

Drew’s photos follow aerial shots last weekend that showed concrete for an underground section of Cars Ridge Run Rally over the same stretch where the old Frontierland boardwalk used to run.

What This Mountain Will Hold

The mountain is the centerpiece of Cars Ridge Run Rally, the off-road racing ride at the heart of Piston Peak National Park. At D23 in August, Imagineer Jason Grandt said the course climbs Piston Peak itself to an icy, snow-covered summit before racing through a geyser field to the finish, with Lightning McQueen and Mater covering the race live on Racing Sports Network. He added that he is especially looking forward to the frosty summit at night.

Cars Ridge Run Rally also debuts a new ride vehicle. Disney says it is designed not to simulate an off-road car but to be one, and Michael Hundgen, vice president creative for Walt Disney World, said guests will feel every bump, drop and rock because the tires and suspension are truly driving over the terrain.

Piston Peak will also be home to Miss Fritter’s Daredevil Spin-Along, a demolition derby ride hosted by a school-bus-sized animatronic of the Cars 3 character. According to the Disney Parks Blog, the land is inspired by the Rocky Mountains and America’s national parks, with towering trees, waterfalls, rivers and geysers, and trees will screen the rally course from the rest of Frontierland and Liberty Square.

Villains Land Is Next Door

Just past Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Disney is building the first land ever themed to the Disney Villains. It will have two headline attractions: a coaster that races through the enchanted briar around Maleficent’s mountaintop fortress, and a dark ride hosted by the Magic Mirror, who pulls guests into his Mirror Realm to meet a lineup of Disney villains. Imagineers have compared the size and scale of the land to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Both lands are part of what Disney calls the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history.
