A New Alien Movie Tied To Prometheus Is In The Works At 20th Century Studios

Alien: Romulus poster from 20th Century Studios

A new Alien movie is in the works at 20th Century Studios, and it is heading back toward the corner of the franchise Ridley Scott built with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Aaron Guzikowski, the writer of Prisoners and creator of HBO Max’s Raised by Wolves, is writing the script.

Scott is producing with Michael Pruss through their Scott Free banner, and J.R. Young is overseeing the project for 20th Century. It is in very early development. Scott is not set to direct at this point, and no director is attached.

Not A Romulus Sequel

The plot is a mystery, but The Hollywood Reporter says this one is not a sequel to Alien: Romulus, Fede Álvarez’s 2024 film that grossed more than $350 million worldwide. Instead, it is said to connect to the two Alien prequels Scott directed in the 2010s.

According to the trade’s sources, the link between them is the amoral android played by Michael Fassbender. Fassbender is not attached to the new film at this stage, so whether the character actually appears is an open question.

Prometheus opened in 2012 and Alien: Covenant followed in 2017. Romulus went a different way, telling a standalone story set between the original Alien and Aliens. A Romulus sequel has been in development, though THR says it remains in limbo.

Why Aaron Guzikowski

Guzikowski and Scott have worked together before. Guzikowski created Raised by Wolves, the sci-fi drama about two androids raising human children after Earth is destroyed in a war, and Scott executive produced it and directed its first two episodes. The show ran for two seasons on HBO Max.

Scott reportedly turned to Guzikowski to get the Alien project moving. Before Raised by Wolves, Guzikowski was best known for writing Prisoners, the 2013 crime thriller that was Denis Villeneuve’s English-language debut.

Where The Franchise Stands At Disney

Alien came to Disney with its purchase of 21st Century Fox, and 20th Century has kept the series busy. Romulus revived the films in 2024, and on television FX’s Alien: Earth has already started filming its second season.

There is no title, cast or release date for the new movie yet. For now, the reported team is Guzikowski on the script, with Scott and Pruss producing for Scott Free and Young overseeing for 20th Century Studios.
